FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS IN THE LIBRARY

1. What are the reader’s ID and password required for reader enquiries?

A. The reader ID is the same as student ID, and the temporary password is the same as that of student ID. Password for transfer students is not created yet.

2. Why am I unable to put a hold on a book?

A. The conditions to hold a book are as follows:
(1) The book has already been borrowed. (2) One person may not put a hold on more than three books at the same time. (3) Only 12 people are allowed to hold the same book at the same time.

Please conform the above three conditions before holding a book.

3. Where may I pick up a book on which a hold has been placed?

A. Please contact the librarian at the front desk to pick up your book.

4. How do I know when my book which has been put on hold has become available? Does a higher rank in a queue mean I can get my book sooner?

A. If the enquiry system displays "hold arrived", this means the book has been returned and is being kept at the front desk. Meanwhile, you'll get a pick up notice in your university e-mail. (You can log onto our Query Borrower Information and correct your e- mail address under Change User Information if necessary.) The order in which you receive a book placed on hold will be based on your place in the queue. The earlier you place a hold, the earlier you will receive your book.

5. How long will my hold last?

A. The book placed on hold should be picked up within one week of the day book has been returned.

6. Why has my renewal request been declined? Is this because my renewal request has been made too early?

A. Renewal should be requested during the period of five days prior to the due date. Request will be declined if renewal request is made before or after that period, or it has already been placed on hold by someone else. Please check your university e-mail as the system will mail a notice to you automatically.

7. Where are overdue fees paid?

A. If you are on Taipei campus, you may pay fees through the Automated Document Machine outside the Taipei Fubon Bank ATM in A Building; if you are on Taoyuan campus, you may pay fees through the Automated Document Machine on the first floor in Q Building . However, please do not forget to bring your receipt to settle your account at the front desk of library.

8. Where can overdue fees be paid for alumni with temporary library cards?

A. Alumni with temporary library cards have to pay overdue fees at the Bursar Section first, then bring their receipts to settle their accounts at the front desk of library.

9. What can I do if a book I did not borrow appears on my account?

A. Please clarify this matter with a librarian at the front desk.

10. What can I do if I returned all my books but the loan record still appears on my account?

A. Please go to the front desk for help, or send an e-mail to library to inquire about the matter.

11. Does a fine of five dollars per day for overdue books include statutory holidays and weekends?

A. The fine is not counted if our libraries closed, but be aware our libraries are still open on weekends during the semester.

12. What does "not showing on library collection" mean?

A. This means the book is under the process of acquisition and cataloging, and that it will appear in our collection after being placed in the stacks. What you see is only partial information regarding our catalog. When new books are acquired they are put in our catalog first. However, in some situations, certain books might be out of print and be unavailable. In such cases, these books will be deleted from our catalog after a period of time.

13. Will all the recommended books be purchased?

A. Almost ninety percent of recommended books will be added to our collection, except for duplications or for other specific reasons. We do not set a ceiling budget for the purchase of new books; therefore your book recommendations are most welcome.

14. What is the ID and password for the recommendation system?

A. The ID and password for this system are the same as for the library system.

15. How long does it take for the arrival of a recommended book?

A. Normally it takes one month for Chinese books and three months for foreign language books which have been recommended to arrive.

16. How do I know whether my recommended books have arrived?

A. You will get an e-mail notice upon the arrival of your recommended books.

17. How can I borrow books from Taoyuan campus?

A. First of all, please check the library catalog for the book you want. If it is available at the Shihlin branch, it is not necessary to request the same title from the Taoyuan branch. If the book is only available in the Taoyuan branch, please click “Transfer Available,” and then fill in the details.

18. How long will it be before I can pick up the transferred book? Will I get a notice of its arrival? How long will a transferred book be held for me?

A. Normally it takes half to one day for transferred books to arrive. No arrival notice will be sent. Please check the status online in the library catalog. If shows "transfer arrived," it means book is available. The book will be held at the front desk for one week.

19. When will the library be open during winter and summer vacations?

A. Opening times will be announced one week before final examinations.

20. Do overdue fees apply during vacation period?

A. In cases where due date falls during vacation period, you had better renew or return books before vacation; otherwise the risk of overdue charges will occur. The library will open in accordance with the university schedule, and the overdue fees for days closed will be deducted.

21. What can I do if a book which is available in the library catalog cannot be found on the bookshelf?

A. If you are unable to find the book you want in the stacks, please send us a note indicating the name of the book you are looking for, or let us know in person, so that we may search for it. In cases where book does not appear for an entire semester, we may process case as a lost book.

22. Can I borrow back issues?

A. Unfortunately, it is not possible to borrow back issues. In order to keep complete continuity for serial publications, they may not be lent out. It is difficult to replace individual items in a serial publication, and publication will be bound as a whole.

23. Where are the bound periodicals in the Shihlin branch?

A. Space in the Shinlin branch is extremely limited, so bound periodicals are kept at the Taoyuan branch. You may borrow bound periodicals by filling in a transfer request form. It takes about half to one day for the transfer.

24. How can alumni borrow books?

A. If you already have an alumni card, you may pay six hundred dollars as a deposit (which will be refunded when you return the books.) If you do not have an alumni card, please bring your previous student ID card and pay 1000 NTD as a deposit to apply for a temporary library card at the front desk. (The deposit is refundable upon return of your temporary library card). In such cases, you may only borrow three books for a period of two weeks each time, and may only renew one time only.


USING ELECTRONIC RESOURCES ONLINE

1. Is it possible to add a function which allows comments or suggestions for the new database? Students could provide their suggestions immediately after they have tried the new database.

A. This is a good suggestion and we will add this function to our updated website.

2. How can I use electronic periodicals at home?

A. If you want to use the service at home, you must receive authentication first. The operation manual may be found on the website database index. First, you have to set up proxy main frame: 140.131.66.5 port no: 3128 when the authentication screen appears. Then, key in your e-mail account number and password, and begin use. Please be aware that you have to key in all of your web address after the “@” in your e-mail account for authentication to be completed. 1. Is there wireless internet in our school library?

A. Yes, we have wireless network. You may also choose to use network ports. Please borrow the connection cord at the front desk after registering.


USING MATERIALS IN NON-BOOK FORMAT

1. Can we borrow the attached disks from library materials?

A. From the second semester of 2004, all the attached disks in language learning books may be borrowed.
